History
Biggleswade, on the River Ivel, is an ancient market town recorded in Domesday, with a charter granted in 1227. Its prosperity grew from agriculture, milling and river trade, later boosted by the Great Northern Railway in the 19th century. Market gardening became a major industry, with vegetables supplying London markets. Today, Biggleswade combines historic streets, market traditions and a strong commuter identity while keeping ties to its agricultural and riverine heritage. Sandy is a historic market town lying at the foot of the Greensand Ridge, its name thought to come from the sandy soils of the area. Once a Roman settlement, it developed as a coaching town and later a hub for market gardening, with produce sent to London by rail. Today, Sandy is also known for being the headquarters of the RSPB, linking its modern identity with both conservation and long-standing ties to the surrounding countryside.
