History

Cheddington, 'Cetta's hill' in Old English, appears in Domesday. St Giles' church has Norman origins and a later Methodist tradition. To the south, an Iron Age hillfort once stood on Southend Hill. In August 1963 the Great Train Robbery took place near the hamlet of Ledburn, bringing national attention. The village's rail links encouraged growth after 1981, but historic houses and the long linear plan still recall its earlier agricultural parish.
