History
Mentmore is dominated by Mentmore Towers, a grand Jacobethan house built 1852–54 for Baron Mayer de Rothschild by Sir Joseph Paxton and G. H. Stokes. The estate shaped the surrounding village in the Victorian period. After the Rosebery family, much of the estate was sold in the 20th century. The house later featured as Wayne Manor in film and has had varied uses, reflecting the shifting fortunes of great houses in Buckinghamshire.
