History
Potters Bar was a small agricultural hamlet until the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the mid-19th century, which transformed it into a commuter town. Its name may derive from a medieval toll gate or “bar” on the road to St Albans. The expansion of housing and services in the 20th century made Potters Bar a significant suburban settlement, though traces of its rural past survive in older cottages and parish landmarks.
